The Three Most Popular Android Sprint Phones

01321995521_8300curve.jpgThe latest Sprint Android to surface is the Nexus 4G. This ‘pure Google’ phone is a promising addition to the Sprint line up of eleven Android devices. The Nexus is growing in popularity as the best Sprint Android. The reason for this is the Nexus comes preloaded with Gingerbread (Android 2.3 Operating System – the latest to date) and has 4G connectivity. You might be wondering what is a ‘pure Android’ phone. It is simply an Android phone that does not have a manufacture interface overlay. The advantage of not having a manufacture interface running on top of the Android platform is that the phone can get immediate upgrades to the latest Android Operating System versions. In the case of phones with manufacture overlays, the manufacture has to reprogram the overlay to adjust to the new Android version. Many users prefer the ‘pure Android’ interface from a visual and ease of use point of view.

 

Sprint mobile has a reasonable selection of Android phones with eleven currently available. The current three most popular Sprint Android phones are the HTC EVO 4G, the Samsung Epic 4G, and the new Nexus S 4G.

I have had the chance to try out the  HTC EVO 4G for a number of weeks now and I had real come to love this phone. While trying the phone, I had the oppertunity of compare it to another competitor in this smart phone market, the Droid X. However, after holding the phone and playing with the X’s interface for a while, I wasn’t impressed.

Sprint has presently three models of Blackberry’s available to you in the US: the Curve 9330 (Purple and Grey), the Style (Purple and Black) and the Bold 9650. For extreme users that like to custom ROM their phones so that they can install unofficial updates, apps, and customize on their phones, the ‘pure Google’ is easier to hack. The Nexus comes with a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, WiFi hot spot capabilities for up to five devices, 4 inch display, front facing VGA camera and a rear 5 megapixel camera and 16 GB of internal storage.

The HTC EVO 4G is the best contender for the top Sprint Android position, with its closes competitors being the Nexus 4G (mentioned above) and followed by Samsung Epic 4G. The HTC EVO has a slightly larger WVGA display at 4.3 inches (800 x 480 pixel resolution). This makes viewing web pages much easier due to the impressive screen size and sharp clarity of the display.
It sports both the front facing 1.3 VGA megapixel camera for video calling and an 8 megapixel rear camera. The rear camera takes excellent pictures and has HD video capabilities. If the camera is an important feature for you, take a look at this phone. The HTC EVO makes use of the Sense user interface, which works well and has the Leap feature that allows you to pinch anywhere on the screen to view all open programs. Like the Nexus and Epic the HTC EVO 4G runs on Sprint’s 4G network, which has good download speeds though is not available in all cosmopolitan areas. This phone has picked up some criticism with regard to battery life, however, I think that it is fair to say that all the smart phones, and particularly the ones running on 4G, have battery issues. This will surely be the next feature for developers to tackle. For some this phone is on the large size being 4.8 inches tall, 2.6 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick.

In a good second place is the Nexus S 4G packed with the latest mobile technologies, including a Super AMOLED Contour  Display with curved glass screen, 1 GHz  Hummingbird processor, and Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking plus 3G Mobile Hotspot capability for sharing your 3G connection with up to six Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously. And with support for Near Field Communications (NFC), the Nexus S can read information from “smart” tags, or everyday objects that have NFC chips in them–from stickers and movie posters to t-shirts. This phone is outfitted with a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera plus a front-facing camera for easy video chats on the go. Other features include assisted GPS    (A-GPS) for navigation and location-based services, Bluetooth for hands-free devices and stereo music streaming, haptic feedback vibration, access to both personal and  corporate e-mail, and up to 6 hours of talk time. And with the Nexus S, you’ll always be the first to receive software upgrades and new Google mobile apps as soon as they become available.

The third flagship Android for Sprint is the Samsung Epic 4G which has a 4 inch Super AMOLEDTM Touch screen and despite the fact it has a keyboard, it is about an ounce lighter in weight than the HTV EVO. This speaks volumes about the AMOLED screen and the great design
on this phone. The charging port is located on the top side of the phone and also has a little slide you need to drag open before accessing the MICRO USB/Charger. With an Android 2.1 Platform which allows for up to 6 hours Talk Time. The 5.0 megapixel camera has auto-focus and a 3x digital zoom which make it possible to take pictures like a digital camera. Even if the objects are moving and stop for a second, the phone will still take good pictures. The Samsung Epic 4G comes with a 1GHz High-Speed Processor and supports Sprint’s 4G WiMax network. One of the best features of this phone is the large slide out physical QWERTY keyboard. If you text message and email frequently, this might be a good option as the phone has fairly similar options to the above two phones and an excellent keyboard.

As a test I removed my own number from the authorized list in my Airave.
Now when I attempt to make an outgoing call, instead of using the local cell tower I just get a message from the Airave that says “We are unable to complete your call … Message 12″. This isnt good. It means every Sprint user within range of my Airave will potentially receive this message when attempting to make a call.
Incoming calls to the phone when within Airave coverage now go directly to Voicemail with no indication of a missed call or Voicemail waiting indicator.
I think, until I get this resolved I will open my Airave to “Unrestricted Mode”.
